A half-day boot camp for graduate students and other advanced researchers in FSU’s STEM fields.

Note: Please bring a laptop.

Search like a Boss (10:00 - 11:00 am)

Explore library databases and other search tools to conduct effective research in STEM disciplines. Highlighted tools will include Web of Science, ScienceDirect, ASTM Compass, and other relevant databases. Advanced searching strategies, analyzing search results, and citation mapping are some of the topics discussed in this workshop.

Intro to Patent Searching for Scientists (11:15 am - 12:15 pm)

Patents are a valuable, complicated, and often underutilized public resource. This workshop is intended to help first-time patent researchers understand what patents are and how to read them. It will cover formal patent searching techniques, free online resources for patent searching, and patent search tools available through FSU Libraries.

Intro to Government Information Resources for STEM (1:00 - 2:00 pm)

This session will provide brief introductions to search strategies for U.S. government information in health and environmental science from federal agencies and the legislature. The session will also include intros to Congress.gov and the new GovInfo.gov for bills and laws, House and Senate documents, and committee reports and hearings on some of the major health and environmental issues in U.S. politics and government.

Staying Ahead of the Scholarly Research Curve (2:15 - 3:00 pm)

In an age of accelerated scientific discovery and dissemination, information outside of traditional peer reviewed journals can be difficult to navigate and evaluate. This workshop explores sources for scientific publications and research data including preprints, research data repositories, and technical literature.
