A half-day workshop for graduate students and other advanced researchers in the Arts and Humanities. These workshops qualify for Preparing Future Faculty and Preparing Future Professionals credit.

10:00am – Research Management Tools for Humanists

In the humanities, we work with many types of research materials, from images to text, and in formats from .pdf to .xlsx to .jpeg. Organizing these varied research materials can be a challenge, especially when we need to keep track of multiple versions of the same file. In this session we will cover some of the tools and best practices for organizing your varied research materials. We will conduct a short demonstration of Zotero for citation management, Tropy for organizing images and GitHub for versioning files. We will also go over some best practices for organizing your file system and some tips for naming your files and folders on your computer.

11:00am – Read All About It: Newspapers in the 18th-20th c.

Starting in the 18th century, newspapers, magazines and other periodicals became an important source of news and entertainment. This session will feature some of the key FSU resources for major and lesser-known periodicals in the 18th-20th centuries. Included are papers newly available through ProQuest’s Historical Newspapers database.

FSU Libraries Special Collections & Archives faculty will offer expert guidance in using special collections materials at Florida State University and elsewhere. Learn how to locate and evaluate rare books and archival collections relevant to your research, how to request and access materials remotely, how to plan a visit to a repository, and what to expect when you get there.

2:00pm – Who Counts? Finding, Using, and Thinking about Census Data

This hands-on session is for users who need to locate current and historical data about populations or who want to learn more about the central role censuses play in how nations govern and define themselves. We will focus our attention on the United States Census, learn how to find and use demographic data across time and geographies, and explore how the answer to the question “Who counts?” has changed over time.

3:00pm – Accessing Films at Florida State University

This workshop provides attendees with details on how to access films through FSU Libraries’ online databases and locate physical films in the collection at Strozier Library. Additionally, the session covers several common copyright concerns regarding the use of film in the classroom.
