A half-day workshop for graduate students and other advanced researchers in the arts and humanities.  These workshops qualify for Preparing Future Faculty and Preparing Future Professionals credit.

10:00am – Conducting a Literature Review in the Humanities

Conducting an in-depth literature review using effective search strategies is one of the core skills required for advanced research in the humanities.  In this session, you will learn tools, skills, and techniques for locating and searching relevant information in databases and catalogs, tracking citations, and keeping current with the literature.

11:00am - Citation Chaining: Participating in the Scholarly Conversation

“Citation Chaining” is a way of searching both backward and forward in the literature to find relevant research material using a seed document as a starting point. In this workshop, you will learn to find cited publications (backward chain) in a seed document as well as find other publications that have cited the seed document (forward chain). The session will focus on problem solving activities that address the particular difficulties of locating older and/or foreign language materials.

FSU Libraries Special Collections and Archives faculty will offer expert guidance in using special collections materials at Florida State University and elsewhere.  Learn how to locate and evaluate rare books and archival collections relevant to your research, how to request and access materials remotely, how to plan a visit to a repository, and what to expect when you get there.

2:00pm - There’s No Such Thing as Free Research (Office of Graduate Fellowships and Awards)

Funding your research can be difficult, especially when you need to travel to conduct research or visit an archive to acquire research materials. During this session, the Office of Graduate Fellowships and Awards will offer guidance on funding your research activities. Learn about databases to search for funding and the support available for you at Florida State University during the application process.

3:00pm – Picture That: A Tutorial for Finding and Using Digital Images in the Humanities

This session is for users interested in the how to’s of image databases and navigating online museum collections. Artstor will be the main platform demonstrated but other resources presented will showcase open access and non-western digital material. The session will end with a brief overview of Fair Use in the visual arts.
